The portal opened into the underworld. They stepped out onto the top of a lone, high hill overlooking a river.

Bijou eyed the stack of body parts, an incongruous sight in the otherwise tranquil setting. “What happened to this guy?”

“His name is Lemminki,” Dream said. “He came to Pohjola to try for one of us. Mother told him he had to retrieve a feather from a black swan. She mentioned black swans swim in the river in the underworld, and he came here to fetch the feather she asked for. Somehow he fell in the water, drown, and get all cut up on nets. But he didn't really die since he was a living being and killed in the underworld. His body and soul are both here and can be reunited. His mother has spent the last ten centuries searching for all his, uh, parts. She's pretty sure she has all of them now.”

“Where is his mother?”

Dream knelt next to Lemminki. “Grandmother and grandfather keep her drunk so she'll stop wailing. She's probably passed out somewhere.”

Bijou sorted through the body parts. “I don't know if I can bring him back to life. I've never resurrected anyone before.”

“Not to worry. We have honey for that.” Dream said. “Please, will you fix him?”

“Do we have time for this? Musette isn't well.”

Viktoria nodded. “We'll get back a few minutes after we left no matter how long we spend in the underworld.”

“All right. Let's see about putting Humpty Dumpty back together.” Bijou arranged the parts of Lemminki's body in anatomical order. When she was finished, the body of a young man lay before her. His musculature hadn't deteriorated, and his skin was warm, its tone a healthy tanned color. He wasn't the dessicated grey husk Bijou expected. If she only looked at his head, the man could have been asleep.

Experimentally, Bijou picked up a forearm and a hand, pushing them together. Bones mended, muscles knit, tendons and ligaments fused. "This doesn't seem like it's going to be too hard." She lifted the arm. The hand slipped off, plopping to the ground.

“That's what always happens. His mother has tried to put him back together numerous times. He always comes apart again, then she wails, and Grandmother has her drink until she passes out.” Dream shrugged. “It's Beer of Oblivion, so his mother forgets what happened last time and starts over.”

“I suppose I could try stitches, but I don't have enough suture for so many. Can you get me some of that spider silk we brought? There was plenty of that, and it should be strong enough to hold.”

Dream beamed, her eyes lighting up. “Weaver will give it to me if I ask her. I'll be right back!” She darted towards the portal and disappeared through it.

“She seems pretty invested in getting him fixed up.”

Viktoria nodded. “I think he’s the one for her, like Jael is the one for me, and Zeke is the one for you.”

“That’s not been decided yet. I don’t think a Boy Scout is for me.
